19th Century Bicycle Festival Another popular contest is that of the antique bicycles. Begun in 1966, the 'Grand Prix' of 19th century bicycles is another dispute between representatives of the seven districts of Fermignano. Three are chosen from each district. Contestants, dressed in 19th century bicycling costumes, climb onto their vehicles and race through the streets of the town to the finish line: but all is not as simple as it might seem. The bicycle seats are 1.30 meters from the ground, handle bars measure 1.30 m. across and pedals are attached to the front wheel, which has a diameter of 1.20 m. Each pedal push moves the bicycle ahead nearly four meters at a time. Contestants need strength and equilibrium to manoeuvre and head over heels tumbles are in order for unwary contestants. The bicycle festival took place each yearfrom 1966 to 1971 then, following a pause, was re-established in 1989 and has taken place each year on the first Sunday of September since then. |
